Why did DLF stop sponsoring IPL ?

IPL 6 has commenced and one major change in this season of the IPL has been the change of its title sponsor. 'DLF' IPL has been now changed to 'PEPSI' IPL. This has raised some doubts among the cricket loving people in India. Thus we too decided to find out why this change took place.

DLF has been the title sponsor of IPL right from the inaugural season uptill the 5th edition. These 5 years have certainly raised the popularity of DLF builders to a large extent. They have gained a lot of publicity just by sponsoring IPL. After being associated with the Indian Premier League (IPL) for five years, real estate major DLF has decided to stop being the league's title sponsor. DLF, which had bagged exclusive rights to the IPL in 2008 for over Rs 200 crore now feels that it is not commercially viable anymore to be associated with the t-20 cricket tournament.

The main reason for DLF's refusal to sponsor the league has been the raise in the price of sponsorship. Several companies had expressed their willingness to sponsor the league at sponsorship prices which were very much higher than the old sponsorship price. This prompted BCCI to raise the price of sponsorship to 350 Crs from existing sponsorship price of 200 Crs.

The companies interested to sponsor the title included Karbonn mobiles, Vodafone, Airtel, Hero Motor corp, Coca Cola and Pepsi. As expected the Cola war was on and both the Cola giants Pepsi and Coca Cola made all attempts to win the sponsorship rights. But in the end it was Pepsi who secured the Sponsorship rights with a whooping bid of 396.8 Crs.

One question which will always remains in our minds will be' is IPL worth 396.8 Crores' ?
